Eine sehr traurige Serie zieht sich durch dieses Jahr – viele meiner großen Illustratoren-Idole sterben weg. Zuerst Ralph Mc Quarrie, kurz darauf Moebius und jetzt Maurice Sendak. Über Maurices Lebenswerk dürfte vieles bekannt sein, daher möchte ich an dieser Stelle eine kleine persönliche Anekdote erzählen.
Eines seiner bekanntesten Werke ist das Bilderbuch “Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen”, dass er sowohl illustrierte als auch schrieb. Dieses Buch spielt für mich eine ganz besondere Rolle, da es früher mein unbestrittenes Lieblingsbuch war und mich bis heute geprägt hat. Ich erinnere mich dunkel an meine Krabbelstubenzeit zurück, als ich dieses Buch förmlich in mich aufgesogen habe. Dann wurde ich älter, sah das Buch sehr lange Zeit nicht und es verschwand aus meinem Bewusstsein - bis es mir während meines Studiums, in der Bibliothek der Hochschule wieder in die Hände fiel. Mir lief ein positiver Schauer den Rücken hinunter, als mir die Bilder wieder begegneten und mich zurück in meine Kindheit transportierten (wer als Erwachsener Dinge wiedererkennt, die er seit seiner Kindheit nicht mehr gesehen hat, weiß was ich meine).

// A very sad continuity marks this year - many of my big Illustrator-idols keep passing away. First was Ralph Mc Quarrie, shortly followed by Jean Giraud and now Maurice Sendak. I guess Maurice’s lifework is well known, so I’d like to tell a little personal note at this point.
One of his most famous works was the children book “Where the wild things are”, that he illustrated and wrote as well. This book is very special to me, because, hands down, it was my absolute favourite children’s book as a kid. Actually, it has been influencing me and my work until today!
I remember being a little kid at the crèche. I literally soaked this book up. Later on I grew up and didn’t see the book for a very long time. The book disappeared from my consciousness … until it came back to me during my time at university, when I found it at the library. A kind of positive shiver came upon me, seeing those pictures that took me back to my childhood instantly (if you ever recognized something as an adult that you haven’t seen since your childhood, you possibly know what I mean).

Dear Maurice, thank you for everything.

Erfreut und mit stolz geschwollener Brust darf ich es verkünden: gerade ist Ausgabe 19 des STREIFBAND-Magazins erschienen! Das STREIFBAND-Magazin ist ein studentisches Projekt der HTWK Leipzig.
Ich durfte für das Heft Illustrationen beisteuern und außerdem einen Artikel verfassen. Der Artikel gibt Einblick in das Leben als Illustrator. Ich hoffe, ich kann damit Außenstehenden einen guten Eindruck von unserem Beruf geben. Viel Spaß!

I’m happy and proud to announce: Issue 19 of STREIFBAND-magazine just came out! STREIFBAND is a student project by HTWK Leipzig. They asked me to draw some illustrations and to write an article.
The article describes the everydaylife from an illustrators point of view. I hope to give a good impression about our job to all you non-illustrators. Please enjoy!

es ist schon eine ganze Weile her, seit meinem letzten Post (ich gelobe Besserung!). Und wie es sich so für solche Art Blogger gehört - lasst uns das Bloggen von diesem (nicht mehr allzu frischen) Jahr mit einem Projekt von leztem Jahr beginnen.
Diese beiden Bilder waren ein privates Projekt, hierbei war die Vorgabe, das Meer in zwei Facetten darzustellen: Einmal wild und stürmisch, sowie einmal ruhig.
Da ich sonst hauptsächlich am Schreibtisch arbeite, bereitete es mir großen Spaß, seit langer Zeit wieder auf der großen Leinwand zu arbeiten und wild mit Farbe herumzuklecksen. Und es war sicher nicht das letzte Mal …

These two pictures were a private project. The task was to illustrate two sides of the sea: wild and stormy on the one hand, calm on the other.
The most of my time, I spend working on my desk, usually not on such a big scale. So I enjoyed that change of working space a lot! It was fun being back at the big canvas, blotting with colour! And this wasn’t the last time, I can tell you for sure …
